Discover Northumbria’s ancient heritage

The Kingdom of Northumbria was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in early England, formed through the union of Bernicia and Deira. Its influence stretched across much of northern England and parts of what is now southern Scotland, creating a rich historical landscape that still shapes the region today.

Northumbria became an important centre of early Christianity, with figures such as St Cuthbert and the monastery at Lindisfarne playing a significant role in its religious and cultural history. Its kings, monasteries and communities left behind stories that you can still discover across the North East.

A guided tour gives you the chance to look beyond the landmarks and understand the people and events behind them. With local knowledge and historical storytelling, we can help you discover the character of Northumbria at a relaxed pace.

Explore Northumbria’s historic sites and stories

Northumbria is filled with places connected to its fascinating past. Bamburgh Castle stands above the Northumberland coast and has strong links to the early kings of Northumbria, while Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is closely associated with St Aidan, St Cuthbert and the development of early Christianity.

The historic landscape extends beyond these well-known locations. Hexham offers its own rich heritage, while the Durham region has important connections to Northumbrian history and the story of St Cuthbert. Along the coast and through historic market towns, there are further opportunities to discover ancient buildings, local traditions and stories that are easy to miss without someone who knows the area.

Whether you are interested in Anglo-Saxon history, religious heritage, castles, coastal landscapes or the stories behind Northumbria's historic places, exploring with a knowledgeable guide can make the experience more meaningful.

Graham was a lovely surprise guide. I had happened across his group after struggling and failing to find a way into the local chapel. His tour happened to be passing through, and he kindly invited me along, with no ask. He said it’s what life is all about, chance encounters like that. Not only would I revisit and ask for him as a guide, ie being my family and friends next time. I was shown Dunkeld’s underbelly through the eyes of someone who was knowledgeable and really cared about it! Please come to Tailabout Tours to learn about the area! He was a gem of a human!
